More than 1.3 million electric vehicles were sold in the United States in 2024

Electric mobility continued to gain ground in the American market over the past year, and all forecasts point to 2025 being an even better year.

After a strong fourth quarter, electric vehicle sales in the United States reached a new record in 2024, rising by 7.3 percent compared with the previous year, to reach 1,301,411 units. An upward trend that, moreover, everything points to continuing throughout the new year that has just begun.

But the good news doesn’t stop there. Another positive fact affecting the American market is that practically all car manufacturers with a commercial presence in the country sold more electric vehicles in 2024 than in the previous year. Tesla was one of the few exceptions to this rule, although it is also true that the North American manufacturer had already set the bar very high in 2023.

It is also worth noting that the market share of electric vehicles in the United States relative to the total for 2024 stood at 8.1 percent. This percentage was reached in a context where overall vehicle sales only rose by two percent.

Other data to consider

As for the country’s main manufacturers, General Motors managed to put more than 114 thousand electric vehicles on the American market in 2024. Meanwhile, Ford sold 97,865 vehicles with this same propulsion system, with all of its electric models achieving record sales figures.

In terms of units sold, Tesla remained at the top with the Model Y as the best-selling vehicle with 372,613 units, followed by the Model 3 with 189,903 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E with 51,745 units. However, both the Model Y and the Model 3 of Tesla experienced sales declines of 6.6 percent and 17.4 percent respectively, while the Mustang Mach-E saw an increase of 27 percent. Tesla led, nevertheless, among car manufacturers, selling a total of 633,762 vehicles in the United States in 2024, followed by Ford with 97,865 electric vehicles and Chevrolet with 68,044.

Looking ahead to the next twelve months, all forecasts agree that a new record in electric vehicle sales will be reached, with an increase also in the market share of this type of vehicle, which could stand at around 10 percent. If the estimates hold, one in four vehicles sold in the American market will have some degree of electrification.
