New Audi A6 Avant: a very premium estate

With the new Audi A6 Avant, the brand of the four rings is completing its new A6 family, which will hit the market this very summer.

Audi had already shown us the new Audi A6 saloon, and now it is the turn of the estate body. And there are no surprises: the new Audi A6 Avant offers what has become customary for the brand of the four rings.

A format that loses none of its elegance compared with the saloon, with the versatility of a boot offering far more possibilities of use. Both will be on sale this summer.

Changes to the A6 Avant: the rear and the boot

Naturally, the changes to the new Audi A6 Avant focus on the rear. Its length rises to 4.94 metres, the same as the saloon. Width is also identical, at 1.89 metres. The height is just one centimetre greater on the A6 Avant, standing at 1.47 metres.

Without increasing its size, the Audi A6 Avant gains 35 litres of boot capacity, with 565 litres in its standard configuration. The advantages become substantial when the rear seat backrests are folded down, reaching up to 1,680 litres.

Both the opening of the tailgate and the boot cover have electric opening as standard, and if the comfort key option is chosen, boot control and opening is added via a gesture of passing the foot beneath the rear bumper.

Other features that make the estate version of the Audi A6 the most suitable for those who use the car for leisure activities are the many possibilities for organising the load.

To the rails with sliding hooks, tensioning straps, nets, or an optional kit with a telescopic bar to divide the boot, is added a practical towing hitch that hides away and deploys at the touch of a button.

All the technology of the new Audi A6, also in the estate

The innovations brought by the Audi A6 will be present in this estate version. Thus, if the same engine range is repeated, the A6 Avant could be chosen with the 3.0 TDI V6 in 231 and 286 CV versions, and the 3.0 TFSI V6 of 340 CV. Below these would sit the four-cylinder engines, presumably the 2.0 TDI that the saloon announces at 204 CV, and a 2.0 TFSI petrol.

All engines will feature the technology that Audi calls “mild hybrid” (MHEV). It is an electric motor that can function interchangeably as a starter motor and as an alternator, capable of recovering energy by taking advantage of braking phases and coasting.

Audi speaks of potential consumption savings of more than half a litre per 100 km in real-world driving.

The quattro versions will not be missing, with a self-locking centre differential on the A6 Avant with V6 engine, and with the quattro ultra system for the four-cylinder engines. Nor will the four-wheel dynamic steering – optional – already announced for the saloon, which allows greater agility in manoeuvres and stability when travelling at high speed on the motorway.

As with the Audi A6, the Avant also offers a choice of four suspension types: standard, sport, adaptive damping, and air suspension.
