Audi presented the new Q7 at the Detroit Motor Show in January and, with this second generation of the SUV in the premium segment, the brand of the four rings sets new benchmarks in the market. The new Q7 marks the debut of the second-generation longitudinal modular platform, on which the technologically advanced Audi for models with longitudinally mounted engines is built.

Its design is bold and masculine, with the exterior mirrors mounted on the upper edge of the doors. The rear tailgate, in its lower section, extends beyond the strongly raked rear pillars, a typical feature of the Audi Q models.

The Singleframe grille has a pronounced relief and is integrated into the front end. Its width extends to the headlights, which feature xenon, LED or Matrix LED technology, depending on the option chosen by the customer. The daytime running lights of the LED headlights are shaped like a double arrow, and the rear light clusters also include dynamic indicators.

As for its dimensions, the Audi Q7 measures 5.05 metres in length, has a wheelbase of 2.99 metres, a width of 1.97 metres and a height of 1.74 metres (with steel spring suspension) but, being shorter and narrower than its predecessor, the cabin is longer and offers more vertical headroom.

Its 3.0 TDI engine means it weighs 1,995 kilograms, 325 kilograms less than the previous generation model, while with the 3.0 TFSI engine the Q7 is even lighter, weighing just 1,970 kilos. Lightweight construction techniques are applied throughout, from the electrical system to the boot. The key is the body structure, in which a new multi-material design reduces weight by 71 kilograms.

Ultra-high-strength elements produced from hot-formed steel sheet have been used for the core of the occupant cell. Cast, extruded or panel aluminium has been used at the front and rear ends, as well as on the roof, accounting for 41 percent of the body structure.

Other components made entirely of aluminium include the doors (which save 24 kilograms), the front wings, the bonnet and the tailgate. Thus, Audi uses new manufacturing methods for the production and assembly of components.

The aerodynamics of this large SUV are outstanding, with a drag coefficient (Cx) of just 0.32. This value is the result of refined engineering solutions such as the almost complete covering of the underbody and a small spoiler at the rear axle area that reduces lift.

The 218 CV V6 TDI that will arrive later (the most efficient model), features louvres between the Singleframe grille and the upper part of the main radiator. The louvres open or close as needed to improve aerodynamics, seeking the greatest aerodynamic penetration advantage and energy optimisation.
