It’s not only the NAIAS that is taking up the front pages of the car media. Today the Brussels Auto Show has kicked off, and the first to offer us some novelties has been Ford, which has presented a new 1.6-litre Duratorq engine and the introduction of the Start/Stop system for three models: the Mondeo, the S-MAX and the Galaxy.

The 1.6 engine will be replacing the previous two-litre unit in the Mondeo and the Galaxy. It is a significant compromise on the part of Ford, using a smaller engine to move relatively heavy vehicles. But that compromise will be backed up by 199 lb-ft of torque between 1,750 and 2,000 RPM. Consumption will also benefit, with 5.4 l/100 km for the Galaxy and 4.9 l/100 km for the Mondeo.

The Start/Stop system will accompany this new Duratorq engine, with a restart cycle of only 0.3 seconds. Ford has also announced that this same stop-and-start system can also be used on the 1.6 Ecoboost engine, completing the brand’s effort to offer increasingly sustainable mobility, according to the spokesperson for Ford Europe present in Brussels.
