Ford has today announced the new Mustang 2016, a discreet update to the model that revives trim details and decorative elements from its past to generate some buzz just days before the Chevrolet Camaro 2016 is unveiled. Most of the changes affect the Mustang GT, but there is also a new addition aimed at the more affordable Mustang EcoBoost.

The most curious is the addition of a particular accessory to the standard equipment of the V8-powered variant. These are diodes integrated into both hood air intakes that are connected to the turn signals and function as such. Requested by Mustang enthusiasts for years, they imitate those that characterised the so-called “Deluxe hood” that Ford offered as an option on the 1967 and 1968 versions of the car.

The Mustang range is expanded this year with two trims that the blue oval already revived in its fifth generation. The Pony, exclusive to the EcoBoost, is identified by its specific 19-inch wheels, the pony emblem with three bars on the grille, the chrome trim around the windows and the side decorative stripe.

The California Special, available only with the Mustang GT, stands out for an identical emblem on the grille, 19-inch wheels in ivory colour, hood air intakes, mirror housings and rear spoiler in black, a carbon-fibre splitter for the lower edge of the front bumper, darkened rear lights, decorative stripes over the hood and the side skirts, version logos in several areas, including the engine brace bar, and a special upholstery combining ivory leather with suede inserts and red stitching.

From autumn, Ford will offer another optional package for the Mustang GT called “Black Accent“, which gives a black finish to elements such as the wheels, the spoiler, the pony and 5.0 badges and the rear lights. Both the EcoBoost and the GT can be customised with the dark-coloured roof inherited from the Boss 302 and stripes in silver or black for that same part of the bodywork.

The list of additions is completed by the Performance package2016-ford-mustang (13) with mechanical upgrades for the convertible body of the Mustang GT — previously reserved for the Fastback — and the inclusion of the SYNC 3 multimedia and connectivity system in the Premium level of this same version of the sports car.

Ford has not yet confirmed whether these trims and optional accessories will be adapted for the European Mustang. Here are more images of these new features:
