New Škoda Scala: a compact PHEV with 70 km of electric range

The Škoda Scala will arrive on the market in 2019 with a plug-in hybrid propulsion system that will produce a combined output of 245 CV. It will have a more premium approach than the car it replaces, the Škoda Rapid.

Škoda will launch a new compact vehicle onto the market, a model that will compete with rivals such as the Ford Focus or the Seat Leon. The Czech brand’s new vehicle will reach the market next year and will be called Škoda Scala. This model will replace the current Skoda Rapid.

A compact based on the bold Vision RS

The new Škoda Scala will be based on the Vision RS sports prototype that was presented at the last Paris Motor Show. This new model represents a true revolution, both for its bold design and for the segment it enters, that of compacts. This category dominated the car market’s share for many years, until SUVs arrived… There are still several “best sellers” in the compact segment (Seat Leon, Ford Focus…), but there are fewer of them every year, and it surprises us that a brand like Škoda dares to launch a product of these characteristics before expanding its range of crossovers.

Cutting-edge technology for a high-end compact

The Škoda Scala will receive some of the most advanced technologies on the market, elements only seen in the brand’s most luxurious models, which make the Škoda Scala a compact vehicle aimed at a buyer with a higher income level than usual.

The Skoda Scala will be built on the MQB A0 platform, that is, it will share the same technical base as the Seat Ibiza, Seat Arona, Volkswagen Golf or Skoda Karoq, among others. The car will be available with an innovative plug-in hybrid propulsion system (PHEV) that will combine a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine (150 CV) with an electric one (102 CV). The combined output of this unit will be 245 CV, which will allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km/h.

70 km of electric range

The car will incorporate a 13 kWh battery, allowing it to travel up to 70 kilometres in 100% electric mode. This battery will be able to recharge to 100% in two and a half hours using a 32-amp socket.

The Škoda Scala will have the difficult goal of recovering the brand’s compact sales in Europe. In the first half of 2018, Rapid sales fell by 2.7% on the old continent, which shows that compacts are losing ground to SUVs, something Škoda will try to counter with this revolutionary PHEV compact.
