New Suzuki Ignis: all versions available with mild hybridisation

The Suzuki Ignis receives a comprehensive overhaul in equipment, design and powertrains for spring 2020. All versions will be available with the Mild Hybrid system.

A few weeks ago we had the chance to test the Suzuki Vitara with the micro-hybrid version. Now, Suzuki has unveiled the mid-cycle facelift of its smallest model, the Ignis. Now we understand why the Japanese brand had put its A-SUV at rock-bottom pricing, because its update was just around the corner. Discounts or not, the Suzuki Ignis stands out as one of the most affordable models in its segment. An added incentive is that it carries the DGT ECO label thanks to the MHEV system. The New Ignis arrives in May and we will shortly bring you the exact pricing and equipment details.

What’s new in design

It is not a profound update where design is concerned, but Suzuki does introduce changes to the model. It leans further into the SUV character, with a new grille featuring chrome elements and a more prominent front bumper with light-grey lower protectors, which contrast with the black of the grille and the body colour. The rear bumper is also new, integrating a lower protector with the same design idea as the front.

The bodywork gains three new colours, which will be offered on two-tone bodies with a black roof. These new colours are: Pearl Ivory, Metallic Yellow and Khaki Green. With this new colour range and the subtle changes to both the front and rear bumpers, Suzuki aims to give its Ignis greater exterior personalisation, as well as emphasising the SUV character despite this being a car aimed at urban use.

A hybrid range designed with your wallet in mind

Suzuki has been selling models with the ECO label for some time. It increasingly embraces that idea, and indeed the New Ignis will feature the 1.2L Mild Hybrid powertrain across all its versions. It can be paired with manual and automatic gearboxes, and with front-wheel or four-wheel drive.

As of today, Suzuki has the following models in its hybrid range: Swift, Vitara, S-Cross and, now, the Ignis. Soon there will be five, with the arrival of the 48V Swift Sport SHVS. As we said, the Japanese brand thinks about customers’ wallets, because all these ECO alternatives from Suzuki are the most affordable hybrid models in their respective segments, both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

The mild hybrid system of Suzuki varies between 12V and 48V. The new Swift and Ignis use the 12V version, which adds extra power with an additional lithium-ion battery and an ISG generator that assists the petrol engine during acceleration. The battery is charged during deceleration.

The Swift Sport, Vitara and S-Cross are equipped with the 48V SHVS. These versions integrate a 48V ISG generator with an electric motor function and a 48V lithium-ion battery. The system assists the petrol engine and provides an extra 10 kW of power. As well as power, it also adds extra torque. Besides earning the ECO label, they reduce consumption by around 1.2 litres compared with the conventional petrol versions. Another point in favour of the wallet.
