New Tesla Model S 70D, the entry-level model in the range is updated

Months after getting to know the Model S P85D, the most performance-oriented and complete version of the Tesla saloon, the opposite end of the range is now being renewed. The most basic version of the model no longer is the 60 and is now called 70D. But the name change brings other updates affecting the mechanicals and equipment.

The Model S 70D gets a second electric motor that provides all-wheel drive, so the 85 becomes the only powertrain option. It also offers 97 extra kilometres of electric range.

Compared with the Model S 60, the 70D is slightly quicker in acceleration – it needs half a second less for the 0 to 60 mph sprint, which is not exactly our 0 to 100 km/h – and reaches a top speed of 225 km/h, 35 km/h more than the previous version.

In terms of equipment, this variant comes as standard with a satellite navigation system and adaptive cruise control, items that were sold as options on the Model S 60. The 70D also allows the vehicle to connect to the Supercharger network that Tesla is gradually installing in several countries.

Tesla Motors announces a price for the United States of 75,000 dollars. This amount is equivalent to about 69,700 euros, so, if the difference in Spain is similar, it would represent an extra cost of close to 10,000 euros compared with the version it replaces. However, this figure does not include the grants for electric vehicle purchases that the customer could benefit from.

The American manufacturer has also announced that it has added three new colours to the range of exterior shades available for the Model S. They are called “Warm Silver“, “Obsidian Black” and “Ocean Blue“, and can be selected on any of the four variants of the model.
