Nissan has presented its latest developments in Autonomous Driving at the 2015 Barcelona Motor Show

Nissan cars are not yet capable of the long-awaited autonomous driving, but its most recent models are prepared to fit technology that helps the driver increase safety on their journeys

The autonomous driving technology is going through an interesting moment. On the one hand, the first truck capable of driving almost automatically has been granted its road registration in the United States. On the other hand, Google acknowledges that it has had problems with its autonomous driving systems, which makes people take everything related to this technology with a pinch of salt. But companies continue to bet on it, and there is no shortage of news in this regard.

That is why, within the 2015 Barcelona Motor Show, a conference called “Connected Car” was held, in which Nissan presented its “Autonomous Drive” project, the set of systems that today are included in the Intelligent Protection Shield and that are already a reality in several of its most current models.

At the moment, the technology fitted to the Japanese brand’s models is not at the level of that which has allowed the Mercedes-Benz truck to be an almost autonomous vehicle, or that which has allowed a Mercedes S500 to complete a journey of just over 100 km autonomously, but it is incorporated into road models, which provide the driver with extra assistance to improve safety while driving.

Some of the technology that is ready in the brand’s vehicles includes anti-lock braking, active cruise control, blind spot monitoring, intelligent parking assist, the Intelligent Protection Shield and the 360º camera, which provide greater safety and will serve as the basis for a new driving concept that could be ready within a few years, so that Nissan cars could become a viable option when it comes to autonomous driving.

Among the models fitted with this technology are the Note, through to the crossovers such as the Qashqai, the Juke and the X-Trail, not forgetting the Pulsar, which is the latest novelty presented and which was also on show at the 2015 Barcelona Motor Show. The question of whether we will soon see an autonomous proposal from this brand remains open, but for now we are seeing more and more technological elements being added that could make it possible within the next few years.
