Nissan offers its North American customers $400 over a "mistake" on the Juke

The truth is that Nissan can hardly be called a genius when it comes to selling the Juke in the US, but a simple calculation will show that a mistake can cost Nissan dearly: $1.6 million.
The “unintentional error” consisted of fitting a smaller fuel tank than it should have been on all Juke models sold in the US in all-wheel-drive configuration. The original tank was to hold 50 litres of petrol, but in the end the Juke’s tank has a capacity of just over 44 litres.
Some 4,000 vehicles were affected, and Nissan has sent their owners a letter of apology and a cheque for $400. Nissan USA has said that each owner is free to cash the cheque within the next 90 days or return the vehicle, which will be bought by Nissan, though only for a limited time.
And assuming everyone cashes the cheque and keeps the vehicle, the Japanese company will pay out more than $1.5 million over a difference of 6 litres of fuel in capacity.
