The popular compact receives a series of updates this autumn, and BMW has already made all its details official. The changes will affect the engines and equipment more than the styling, as the design sees very slight changes that only the most observant will be able to spot. The new MINI three-door, Clubman and Cabrio will be available from 18 September.

Starting with the exterior, the changes can be seen in the lower front grille, with a slightly larger air intake and, on the Cooper S, chrome elements, which also appear on the trim of the front and rear lights. The latter now incorporate LED lights and dynamic brake lights. The front bumpers have been redesigned to increase pedestrian protection, and other details such as the side badge of the Cooper S trim and the chrome rear diffuser trim are different.

Inside, the interior sees changes to the audio system and climate control controls to make them more comfortable to use, personalisation options increase with the Colour Lines trim and decorative strips, and new colours, upholsteries and higher-quality materials are offered. The combinations of body colour and cabin shades also increase.

These consist of three packs called “Classic”, “Rallye” and “Scene”, which offer different colour combinations for the exterior, components (roof and mirrors), upholstery, wheels or Colour Lines trim, each with a personality matching its name. However, customers can still personalise their MINI as they wish. To do so, they can now choose the Chili Red roof and side mirrors or opt for more wheels.

In the engine range, the petrol versions remain as before (One with 75 hp and 98 hp; Cooper with 122 hp; and Cooper S with 184 hp), but in the diesel pair there are significant changes. The 1.6-litre engine with variable-geometry turbo and common-rail direct injection now features a diesel particulate filter and meets the Euro 5 emissions standard.

The One D variant produces 98 hp and 215 Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.4 seconds and reaches 184 km/h. Its average consumption is among the lowest in its segment, 3.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, and it emits only 99 grams of CO2 per kilometre. This version can now also be ordered with the Clubman body, in which case acceleration is 0.4 seconds slower, top speed is 182 km/h, consumption is 0.1 litres higher and it emits 103 grams of CO2.

And the Cooper D, with 112 hp and 270 Nm of torque in the same rev range as the One D, takes 9.7 seconds to reach 100 km/h and can go up to 197 km/h. Average consumption and emissions are exactly the same as the One D. Another novelty is that the Cooper D is now available in both the Clubman and the Cabrio. In the former it consumes 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres and emits 103 grams of CO2 per kilometre, while in the latter these figures are 4 litres and 104 grams.

Finally, the equipment range is expanded with options such as black reflectors for the headlights, a cornering light system available only with xenon headlights, an automatic anti-dazzle system for the exterior mirrors, new LED lighting for the cabin, a roll-up cover for the boot of the Clubman, a new audio system compatible with MP3 and auxiliary input, an audio USB port, a Bluetooth hands-free system for controlling the radio and navigation system, and connectivity via the MINI Connect app with an iPhone to use its functions, such as checking Facebook and Twitter.
