Porsche confirms there will be no new Macan with a combustion engine

However, the possibility that Porsche may end up selling a new hybrid compact SUV similar to the Macan by the end of this decade is not ruled out, although it would not be a Macan.

The combustion-engine Porsche Macan has been one of the most successful models from the Stuttgart-based brand, with more than 800,000 units sold over the last decade. That is why the German manufacturer’s decision to make the new and current generation of this compact SUV exclusively electric surprised many with its boldness.

It is therefore no surprise that some rumours emerged in recent months suggesting that Porsche might be reconsidering this decision and finally offering a combustion-engine version of the new Macan. However, it now appears that those rumours reflected only the wishes of some people, but were far from reality.

During the recent annual financial results conference, Porsche made it clear that it is fully committed to the electric Macan. But that is not all: the German brand has also confirmed that this compact SUV will be sold exclusively as a fully electric vehicle worldwide once the previous combustion-engine version stops being produced.

It is worth remembering that although the previous-generation combustion-engine Macan is no longer sold in Europe, the same is not true in other markets such as North America, where both the electric and combustion-powered generations remain in the manufacturer’s range. However, this will not last long, since the combustion-engine Macan will finally be discontinued globally in 2026.

Will we see a new hybrid compact SUV from Porsche?

There is, however, a glimmer of hope for everyone who misses the option of buying a Macan with a combustion engine, whether now in Europe or from 2026 in other markets. According to a representative of Porsche itself, the German firm “will continue to closely monitor market trends and its customers’ preferences, in order to meet existing demand”. A statement that, although it confirms nothing, seems to leave the door open to the possible launch, at some point in the more or less near future, of a hybrid compact SUV smaller than the Cayenne. That said, this model will in no case be called Macan and will therefore have a different design from the current electric-powered generation.

It is not known at this point, however, whether this model would also reach the European market should it finally become a reality. If so, this new hybrid compact SUV from Porsche would join the German manufacturer’s range alongside the current electric Macan and a renewed new Cayenne with hybrid and electric versions, as well as an update of the current combustion-engine Cayenne.
