Production of the new Jeep Compass starts in Italy

Jeep states that the new Compass has been designed, developed and produced in Italy, also highlighting the versatility, capability and technological level of this compact SUV in the C segment.

Jeep has just started production of the new Compass at the Italian plant in Melfi, where a fully electric version of this compact SUV will also roll off the line this time. The new Compass will not, however, be the only model with this powertrain produced at this plant, as Stellantis also plans to start production of new electric models in Melfi over the coming months.

The official announcement was made today, 29 October, although the images published in the press release show finished units dated 22 and 23 October, which shows that the first Compass units began coming off the assembly line several days ago.

The third-generation Compass is based on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform. Melfi already builds the DS N°8, including its electric version, and production of the Lancia Gamma will begin next year. On the other hand, although it has not yet been confirmed, it seems possible that a Opel model could also come out of this same plant in the near future.

Stellantis builds other models based on this same platform at other plants in the group, as is the case with the Peugeot E-3008, E-5008 and the Opel Grandland Electric. At 4.55 metres long, the Compass is, however, one of the most compact models using this platform.

Technical specifications to consider

The various powertrains offered with the new Compass are also available in other Stellantis vehicles. The entry-level version of this compact SUV has a single 157 kW motor integrated into the front axle, paired with a 74 kWh battery pack. This is the only version that will be offered initially but, later on, a higher version with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive delivering a combined output of 276 kW will also be available.

The link between Jeep and the Italian plant in Melfi goes back a long way: in 2014 it was the brand’s first production centre outside North America, where production of the Renegade began. Just as would happen years later with the second-generation Compass, including its plug-in hybrid version. The new Compass is now offered for the first time in a fully electric version, while still keeping hybrid options.
