Renault accelerates development of the new electric Twingo to begin commercialisation in less than 3 years

It is still unclear which platform this electric city car will use, and it is not out of the question that it could share one with another similar model from a different manufacturer to reduce costs

According to a recent report, development of the new electric Twingo is already well advanced. The final design has already been finalised, and the company has set itself a deadline of less than three years for the first units to begin reaching the streets of major European cities. If everything goes according to plan, Renault expects series production of this electric city car to begin at the company’s Slovenian plant in 2026.

With the final design locked in since last week, Renault has already begun looking for suppliers of the components needed for assembly. The next stages of development for the new electric Twingo will include building prototypes and carrying out multiple performance tests. Work will also begin on the tasks needed to start production, which will get under way at the Slovenian plant in Novo Mesto in 2026.

Renault Twingo 2026 Side

At the French brand’s management, they are very clear that for the electric Twingo to be a success, the price of the entry-level version must sit clearly below 20,000 euros. And they are working hard to achieve it. Although last November some rumours suggested that Renault might be evaluating a possible partnership with Smart to share a platform and thereby reduce costs, the French manufacturer ultimately denied this.

Some important details about Renault’s new electric city car are still up in the air

The truth is that, as of today, it is not clear which platform the new electric Twingo will be based on. Some rumours now suggest that it could ultimately be Volkswagen, the manufacturer that could team up with Renault. The German brand also wants to launch an electric city car around the same time that it would replace the e-Up, and could therefore be interested in collaborating with Renault so that both companies benefit from lower production costs. If this finally happens, we should have news about it in the coming months.

The launch calendar for Renault’s new electric models is shaping up as follows. This same year we will finally see the long-awaited new Renault 5, which will be followed a year later by the new R4, also electric. The electric Twingo will thus be third on the list, by 2026, if no unforeseen incident arises in its development and the subsequent start of its production.

Renault Twingo 2026 Back

Ampere, Renault’s electric vehicle division, plans to sell seven electric models in total by 2031. The company hopes that production of these new models as a whole will reach one million units a year, and also believes that the prices of electric models will match those of their combustion-engine equivalents around 2027 or 2028.
