Xiaomi begins first deliveries of the SU7 in China

However, many customers will still have to wait months before they receive a unit of Xiaomi’s new electric saloon

The Chinese manufacturer has just started delivering its first electric vehicle in its home market. The first SU7 units have already been delivered to selected customers at the company’s plant in Beijing, as well as at other locations in 28 different cities across the country.

Xiaomi officially launched sales of the SU7 last week, and has since been accepting firm orders. In less than seven days, the company says it has already received more than 40,000 orders from convinced customers, to which must be added more than 100,000 reservations requiring a deposit payment. The enormous interest generated by the new electric saloon from the Chinese manufacturer is undeniable, largely probably due to its unexpectedly low selling price.

As the manufacturer had previously announced, the SU7 units that have begun to be delivered correspond to the Standard and Max versions of the Founders Edition limited to 5,000 units. Xiaomi will begin delivering units of these same versions that are not part of this limited special edition from the end of this month. Later, at the end of May, deliveries of the Pro version will also begin.

One of the most sought-after electric cars at the moment

Even with deliveries starting so early, many customers will nevertheless have to wait a long time before receiving their coveted vehicle. The company announced just a few days ago a delivery period of up to 30 weeks for the SU7 Max version. That is, more than seven months. And up to 21 weeks for the other two available versions. As for production volume, some Chinese media claim the company’s goal is for the Beijing plant’s assembly line to produce 10,000 units per month, but for now this is no more than a target to be reached.

Xiaomi produces the SU7 at its Yizhuang plant, a suburb of Beijing. As the company explained some time ago, this plant could eventually produce 200,000 vehicles a year. However, current production volume is much lower. Even if the current production target of 10,000 units per month were reached, annual production would be just 120,000 vehicles.

Versions on sale in China and prices

The Standard version of the SU7 is available in the Chinese market from 215,900 yuan, which works out to roughly 27,600 euros at the current exchange rate. This entry-level version features a 73.6 kWh LFP battery pack from supplier BYD. It also has a single electric motor on the rear axle producing 220 kW. One step up, the SU7 Pro uses the same 220 kW motor on the rear axle, but in this case paired with a larger-capacity battery pack of 94.3 kWh. The cells it uses are NMC rather than LFP, and the supplier is CATL. The price of this version in the Chinese market starts at 245,900 yuan -about 31,475 euros-.

Finally, at the top of the range, the SU7 Max has dual electric motors that raise combined output to 495 kW. Battery capacity is even greater, at 101 kWh. It uses the well-known Qilin battery pack from CATL. Anyone who wants this higher-performance version of the SU7 will have to pay a minimum of 299,900 yuan, which works out to roughly 38,390 euros.
