Sad farewell: the Volkswagen Passat ends production
The saloon version of the Volkswagen Passat says goodbye to Europe, a popular model that has been with us since 1973, becoming a benchmark in its segment

Without a doubt, one of the most popular saloons on the market today, and one that has been with us for almost 50 years, is the Volkswagen Passat, known from the outset for its excellent value for money, and which now, after eight generations, bids farewell in its saloon variant.
Like many other models in the same segment from other brands, the Passat has suffered greatly from the SUV trend that has dominated markets around the world for several years. In addition, its sibling the Volkswagen Arteon, which we already tested at Highmotor, has led Volkswagen to decide to end production of its legendary saloon.
A name that will only remain on the Variant
That said, the German brand will for now keep the estate version known as Variant, which, as Volkswagen announced a few months ago, will be renewed for 2023, replacing the current B8 generation and based on the versatile MQB platform of the group.

If we look at registration data for the last two years in our country, the Volkswagen Passat has accumulated a total of 4,773 units, a figure that, although not exceptionally low, has led Volkswagen to end sales in countries such as France, where the model can no longer be configured.
Awaiting further news
For now, Volkswagen Spain has not announced anything about this news, so unless otherwise notified, the Passat saloon will continue to be sold with its varied engine range, which includes petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines.
If we consider other reasons why Volkswagen may have pursued this strategy, we must not forget its ID. family, which already includes models such as the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and the much-anticipated ID.7, whose camouflaged test photos have already circulated, suggesting it is the most direct successor to the Volkswagen Passat.
