SEAT is moving into electric mobility and will produce a new electric city car in 2025

This Monday it was announced that SEAT wants to lead the electric city car market and will launch a model aimed at this contested segment in 2025.

SEAT has been one of the brands that has taken the longest to take the step towards electrification, but wants to become the one that represents this segment within the Volkswagen group, always looking at entry-level models. This means it wants to remain an economical brand, with entry-level cars and aims to offer important features while keeping prices under control.

To do this, it has announced that it will have an electric city car ready for market launch in 2025. This project aims to be present in the market with a price range between 20,000 and 25,000 euros, below models currently on sale and others that will arrive soon.

Mission: Putting Spain on electric wheels

The brand can take credit for making cars popular in Spain thanks to the SEAT 600, and its intention now is to make electric cars accessible in our country. Another important announcement is that the Martorell plant has many of the conditions needed to host production of this model. And not only this one: SEAT’s plans involve manufacturing 500,000 electric city cars per year.

The location of the plant in charge of this task is still a mystery, but the idea of Barcelona as an important hub in Southern Europe is gaining strong traction. Adapting this plant to electric car production will require at least 2.4 billion euros. The planned investment for this conversion to electric mobility is 5 billion euros until 2025, when the brand’s adaptation plan will be completed.

The plant that benefits from this investment will be the one responsible for manufacturing vehicles for all the group’s brands, consolidating production in a single factory and simplifying the investment. For now, everything is up in the air, but all eyes are on Martorell, so it is quite possible that production of electric city cars will stay in Spain.

CUPRA Tavascan

The high-performance variant brand, which depends on SEAT, has announced the launch of the Tavascan. This crossover promises a range of up to 500 kilometers on a single battery charge. This model will use the MEB platform, already used by other electric models in the group Volkswagen. These, incidentally, are not manufactured in Spain, at least for now. The launch date of the CUPRA Tavascan is planned for late 2024, so we will soon start receiving information about what this model will offer.
