Skoda surprises us with a competition variant of the Enyaq Coupé RS

The advances in biocomposite materials implemented in the development of this prototype could inspire the design of future electric vehicles.

Skoda has just unveiled the Enyaq RS Race, a prototype that combines the thrill of motorsport with sustainable innovations that could one day make their way into production models. Based on the Enyaq Coupé RS, this prototype stands out for its use of high-tech materials with the sole purpose of reducing weight and improving efficiency, while still paying special attention to sustainability.

The Enyaq RS Race first appeared in October 2024. On that occasion, the Czech manufacturer showed a version based on the model prior to the facelift of the Enyaq Coupé RS. Since then, the production model has received an aesthetic update, and the prototype has also been refined. Nevertheless, despite the change in image, its main specifications remain the same.

It therefore retains the same two motors with a combined output of 250 kW, which provide all-wheel drive. However, some modifications have been applied with the aim of improving its performance on track. Thus, its ground clearance has been lowered by 70 mm, and the front track has been widened by 72 mm and the rear by 116 mm. Thanks to these changes, together with the replacement of the DCC suspension with a sporty setup and the addition of limited-slip differentials, Skoda promises that its track behaviour is comparable to that of the Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, a benchmark in the world of rallying.

The less it weighs, the faster it goes

On another note, and as we have already mentioned, one of the most notable aspects of this prototype is its lightness. Engineers have removed components unnecessary for a competition vehicle and replaced others with lighter materials, achieving a weight reduction of more than 300 kg.

For example, the side and rear windows have been replaced with polycarbonate ones, a standard in rally vehicles. In any case, the big novelty lies in the use of a biocomposite with flax fibres, developed in collaboration with Bcomp, which replaces carbon fibre in 16 components of the vehicle, including bumpers, wings, the roof, the rear spoiler and parts of the interior. This material is not only lighter but also much more sustainable, as its production generates 85 percent less CO2 emissions than carbon fibre, with similar rigidity and lower costs.

This innovation not only improves the performance of the Enyaq RS Race, but also has the potential to be applied in the production of series vehicles, thus achieving an improvement in efficiency without giving up sustainability.

The Enyaq RS Race is, in short, a statement of intent. With it, the Czech manufacturer has demonstrated that it is possible to combine the power and excitement of motorsport with sustainable technologies.
