Skoda unveils the Skoda Slavia roadster

After more than three months of work, the Skoda Slavia prototype presents what could be the transformation of the Skoda Scala compact into a convertible sports car

Your eyes may have lit up when you saw the Skoda Slavia that tops this article because, to be honest, it is a very eye-catching car. A compact convertible with sober yet very attractive lines which, if it went into series production, would surely be an affordable convertible, not to say cheap. Now comes the cold splash of water: it is only a prototype.

Based on the formidable Skoda Scala, which in every sense proved itself on our road test, the Slavia is the realisation of a project that began in spring 2020 with a team of students from the vocational training school of the Czech company, who have proposed this hypothetical Skoda Scala roadster as the successor or reincarnation of the Skoda 1100 OHC.

Far from getting into the debate over the similarities between an egg and a chestnut, the Skoda Slavia proposes a two-seat convertible with a sporty character because, while the original model based its appeal on a sublime balance between a strikingly seductive appearance achieved by sculpting a body made from lightweight materials, and a driving experience where its power-to-weight ratio, with a mere 550 kg against a 1.1-litre engine delivering almost 100 CV, managed by a 4-speed gearbox, allowed it to reach 190 km/h.

The prototype, for its part, is a masterful modification of the Skoda Scala and, for that reason, this one-off example features the 1.5 TSI engine producing 150 CV, a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox, as well as a modified architecture to transform a compact into a roadster which, to crown the whole, sublimely shows off the 20-inch wheels corresponding to the Skoda Kodiaq vRS.

But if this Skoda Slavia also stands out for anything, it is for its interior, worthy of a sports car and of the high end. Apart from the infotainment system, the ensemble signed by Sparco, which includes superb bucket-type seats bearing the brand name and flanked by two intimidating lions.

A one-off example which, we hope, hope, hope, Skoda might be taken into production to delight a community of affordable sports cars enthusiasts, now running on very low fuel.
