At Skoda they still have no electric or hybrid model in their range, but this will change soon with the arrival of the Skoda Superb hybrid in 2019

It does not yet have a hybrid or fully electric model in its range, but this will not take long to change at Skoda, as we were told last summer with a roadmap that gave us a preview of these new, greener models. In this regard, they are now providing us with further details about the electrification of its range, something that will happen sooner rather than later.

To begin with, they tell us where all these new models will be created, specifically at the plant Skoda has in Mladá Boleslav, located northeast of Prague. From 2019 onwards, this plant will be responsible for manufacturing the fully electric models, as well as various electrical components that will form part of the plug-in hybrid models.

But the Mladá Boleslav plant will not have the sole task of producing components for Skoda models, and some of those electrical components for plug-in hybrids will also be used for many other models of the Volkswagen Group. All of this will undoubtedly give a significant boost to Skoda as a brand, but also to the economy of the Czech Republic itself, ensuring full-capacity work at this plant and the creation of new jobs.

Even so, although the nerve centre of Skoda’s electric models will be located in Mladá Boleslav, it is curious that the brand’s first electric model will not come from this plant. The first model of this kind will be manufactured at the Kvasiny plant, where the plug-in hybrid version of the Skoda Superb will see the light of day in 2019. It will not be until 2020 that production of the first fully electric Skoda model begins in Mladá Boleslav, a model that may well reflect the influence of the Vision E concept presented at the recent Shanghai Motor Show.

With the arrival of these first models, Skoda will gradually electrify its range, until by 2025 it offers five fully electric models for different segments, as confirmed by Skoda CEO Bernhard Maier. But the brand will not only be modernised in this respect: products and processes will also be digitalised, and the brand will expand into new markets and new products that go beyond traditional cars, including other mobility services.
