Spain: the hypocritical official cars of the Spanish political class
The Spanish political class flaunts luxury cars, while the crisis continues in Spain and fewer and fewer cars are being sold.

While we are being led to believe that Spain saves money with electric cars and that speed limits are good for reducing oil imports, Spanish politicians and leaders continue to use cars costing more than 100,000 euros each, vehicles whose price and maintenance are paid for by all the Spanish people.
If we talk about favourite brands, most of them are no less than a Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz or Volkswagen Phaeton. The A8 already seems to be a true classic for this kind of task, since many Spanish politicians have a high-end Ingolstadt model for their work.
The Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has at his disposal three Audi A8s and one Mercedes S-Class for official use. All three vehicles are armoured, so the cost soars to almost double the value, counting maintenance and the mandatory renewal of the armour once it reaches the end of its useful life.
It must be acknowledged that the only figure in the political class who would be entitled to own three armoured cars is the Prime Minister, given his high office. But why would the rest of the civil servants need a fleet of 35,000 official vehicles?
The truth is that we all like cars, and the more powerful and luxurious the better. But while car sales in Spain are far from good and the economic crisis keeps raging unchecked, it does not seem right for politicians to continue squandering a large part of the official budget on cars that are very out of step with the times we are going through.
