Starting the car in the cold: these tips will help you do it safely
During winter and in low-temperature situations, you need to take care with the start-up so that the engine works properly in cold weather.

When the temperature is very low, the engine does not run normally at the moment of starting. The cold affects the start and several things must be considered so that the engine is not damaged by trying to start it immediately and forcing the situation. Let’s see how to start the engine from cold correctly.
Do not accelerate straight after starting
We have a habit of revving the car as soon as it starts. This is a mistake, and it is best to wait a few seconds before accelerating and setting off. That way, once started, the warm oil circulates through the whole engine, lubricating all the components and allowing them to gain temperature gradually. In this way, these mechanical components are prevented from being overstressed and can work properly.

Depress the clutch when starting
Although it may not seem so, pressing the clutch reduces the effort the engine has to make to start. With the transmission disconnected from the engine, it only has to move its own components, thus reducing the effort it has to make when starting. This small trick means the engine doesn’t suffer as much and improves starting in low-temperature conditions.
If it doesn’t start, wait before trying again
If the engine does not start at the first attempt, do not keep turning the key for several seconds. It is better to return the key to its initial position, wait about 15-20 seconds and try again. Keeping the ignition on until it starts can drain the battery and damage the starter motor. So it is better to be patient and allow some time to pass for the car to start.

Check the condition of the battery
The battery suffers greatly from the effects of the cold. You should check the condition of this essential component of the car and make sure it has charge and will perform its function. A maintenance charger can help in situations where the battery does not allow the engine to start. One way to solve this problem is to make long journeys, which keep it charged and in good shape.
Avoid accelerating abruptly as soon as you start
When starting, wait a little before accelerating hard. Accelerate gradually and try to drive smoothly. The oil needs to reach a temperature of around 95 ºC. Until then, it does not fully protect the engine components, so the engine works better and with less risk when it is warm.
Use an oil suited to the cold
The cold also affects the oil, so you should use a type of oil that works efficiently in those conditions. It is important to use the most suitable one for the time of year and the temperature at which the vehicle will operate.
