Surprising! The Tesla Model 3 will have the best depreciation in its class

Autolist has forecast the depreciation curve of the Tesla Model 3, and the results place it ahead of models such as the BMW 3 Series or the Mercedes C-Class.

Tesla design chief Franz von Holzhausen claims that the Model 3’s interior “will age with dignity” over time, a factor that, a priori, could improve its residual value considering that cars are going to change a great deal in the coming years with the arrival of autonomous driving systems and carsharing.

Curiously, a report prepared by Autolist backs up Holzhausen’s forecasts. The study projects the depreciation curve of the Tesla Model 3, and according to the results the electric saloon “will be the best in its class”. Autolist’s market analysts had previously published a report claiming that the Model S retains its value better than its combustion rivals, losing only a 28% of its value after covering 80,000 km.

Autolist’s Vice President of Data Science, Alex Klein, stated the following in an email published by Electrek:

“Using the Model S data and the prices of the Model 3’s competitors as a reference, our forecast projects a depreciation curve that places the Model 3 at the very top. The vehicle would only lose 29% of its value after 50,000 miles (80,000 km) and 50% after covering 100,000 miles (160,000 km),” says Alex Klein.

This is the depreciation curve of the Model 3 compared with its direct rivals: BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class.

To obtain more conclusive data for its study, Autolist conducted a survey of more than 14,000 people with the aim of finding out which factors are most relevant to the buyer of an electric car. As expected, the most decisive factor turned out to be range, something the Model 3 has in abundance according to most respondents in the study itself.
