Tata is advancing in electric mobility and will have several electrified models in 2020

The Indian manufacturer is preparing the launch of electric cars based on Ziptron technology, which it is developing for use across all models

Tata Motors is an Indian brand that has made some relevant headlines in the international press but does not have a strong presence in international markets. This, apparently, is about to change thanks to the development of future electrified models. The Indian brand wanted to go down in history by manufacturing a city car with low consumption and emissions, but also with a correspondingly low price. The Tata Nano was a failure and the brand therefore had to withdraw it from the market. It is now developing an electric traction system to have electric cars by the end of 2020.

This electric traction system will be called Ziptron and although nothing has been published about the technical characteristics of this system, the company has assured that it will be a powertrain that guarantees fast performance, long range, fast charging capability and a battery pack with an eight-year warranty.

What Tata Motors does confirm is something that is part of the company’s essence. According to its executives, the cars arising from this project will be affordable and within reach of every budget. Electric cars that will not cost much and will use common components and a scalable architecture, which will allow development costs to be spread across all models and allow a competitive price. This will enable Indian buyers, who will be the first to enjoy them, to access this technology easily.

The Ziptron technology has been under testing for several months and according to the company many tests have been carried out, with just over one million kilometres covered. Apparently, this technology is delivering the results that were expected. According to the conceptual sketches, the Ziptron system is made up of a T-shaped battery pack that powers an electric motor which, they claim, is “highly efficient” and has “excellent performance”.

The models that use this electric traction system will also feature a regenerative braking system and will have a high level of protection against dust and water, so it could be quite practical and useful for terrain such as that found in India. According to Tata, this launch of electric vehicles will enable the transition to electric mobility in the country.
