Tesla begins sales of the long-wheelbase Model Y L in the United States
With this launch, Tesla makes the most of its existing range without having to develop a completely new model, thereby competing in the segment of large family electric SUVs.
Tesla has begun selling in the United States the six-seat version of the Model Y that has been on sale in China since last year, called Model Y L. The American manufacturer announced the news this past Thursday, and the vehicle is already available on the brand’s online configurator, for the time being only with all-wheel drive and the Launch Edition trim level.
At almost five metres long (4.98 metres to be exact), the Model Y L is 18 cm longer than the standard version thanks to a wheelbase extended by 15 cm, reaching 3.04 metres. This greater length allows a 2+2+2 seating layout, where the third row offers noticeably more space than the short-wheelbase seven-seat option that Tesla sells in Europe, which is very cramped for adults.

It should also be noted that, according to the manufacturer, this new model accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.4 seconds and offers an EPA range of 523 km. The new Model Y L for the American market is manufactured at the Texas plant.
How much does it cost in the United States?
The price of the Model Y L Launch Edition starts at $61,990. It is therefore somewhat more expensive than the Model Y Performance, which is priced at $57,990 in the United States. This price is also slightly above some of its direct rivals in this market, such as the Kia EV9 or the Hyundai IONIQ 9, which also have three rows of seats.
The new Model Y L nevertheless offers a genuinely comprehensive level of equipment, including premium individual seats in the second row, heated and ventilated, heating in the third row as well, special badges and, for the first twelve months, FSD (Full Self-Driving) Supervised for free, along with unlimited free charging at the brand’s Supercharger network.

With the Model Y L, the company aims to fill a real gap in the American market after removing the Model X Premium SUV from its lineup. Although it was considerably more expensive, it was an option worth considering for large families.
After its debut in China in August 2025, the long-wheelbase version of the Model Y has been extended to other markets such as Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia. Now it is the turn of the American market. What will be next?
