Tesla raises the price of the Model 3 dual AWD motor

It seems that Tesla can’t make up its mind about the price of the dual motor, the all-wheel-drive option of the Model 3.

The electric car manufacturer has changed the price three times in just a few months. It has gone up by as much as 20%, now standing at $6,000.

When Tesla introduced the dual-motor option for the Model 3 earlier this year, it was priced at $5,000. Most surprisingly of all, CEO Elon Musk stated that this option would be cheaper than the one for the Model S.

A few weeks ago, Tesla updated the options and prices of the improved versions of the Model 3, which meant a price reduction of up to $4,000 in total for the dual-motor version.

In August, however, Tesla raised prices again to $5,000 in total. A month later, the manufacturer would increase prices once more, which were available from the Model 3 online configurator:

The dual-motor Long Range version now has a total price of $55,000, that is, $6,000 more than the Long Range version with four-wheel drive and battery pack.

Curiously, Tesla has not increased the price of the Performance version, which is equipped with the same dual motor, which makes little sense.

Tesla has made some statements on the matter:

“Occasionally we adjust the price and available options, in order to reflect the value of our products and their production cost. The changes made today are a clear example of this. The dual motor of the all-wheel-drive Model 3 is an option whose cost is $6,000, and, from September 13, we will remove 2 colour options. The best way for customers to see the current price as well as the equipment options is through our online configurator.“.

During the company’s most recent conference, held to release the month’s results, it was revealed that 50% of the Model 3s sold have chosen the dual-motor option instead of the Performance and non-performance versions.
