It has only been a few days since the month of March ended, and we already have the registration data for the third month of 2016.

In this article we are going to review the five best-selling models in March 2016, as well as the year-to-date total and the trend in the sector.

Vehicle registrations are one of the clearest indicators of a region’s economy. When registrations rise, as a general rule it means that the country’s economy is moving forward positively, something that has been happening in Spain for a little over two years without interruption.

However, as a significant figure, it is worth noting that for the first time in 30 months, registrations in March have fallen by 0.6% compared with March 2016. It is worth clarifying that this decline is largely due to rental data, since excluding rent-a-car companies, the change in registrations between March 2015 and March 2016 is a positive 3.6%. In total, March closed with 112,139 units registered.

The five best-selling models in March

SEAT Leon

The SEAT León is once again crowned as the sales leader in Spain during March 2016. In the third month of the year it managed to sell 3,609 units, with a year-to-date total of 9,748 units, also making it the best-selling model of 2016. We tested it in its most rugged version a few weeks ago, you can find all the information here.

SEAT Ibiza

Although it is a veteran model, the facelift the SEAT Ibiza underwent a few months ago seems to have worked wonders, since it has held top positions in the sales charts ever since. In March, 3,293 units were registered, only 300 fewer than its bigger sibling. In the year-to-date total for 2016 the figure rises to 8,145 units, also placing it as the second best-selling model of 2016.

Opel Corsa

The third and final step of the podium goes to the small German city car built in Figueruelas. The fifth generation of the Corsa has been posting good registration figures for several months, a trend that has continued in March of this year, with 2,897 units registered. In this case it does not match its position in the year’s year-to-date total, since it is the fourth model with the most registrations in 2016, with 6,801 units.

Corsa 1.4T 2

Nissan Qashqai

The evergreen Qashqai continues to strike hard. In its segment it is the undisputed leader, with figures that put it far ahead of its rivals. In March its registrations were 2,591 units, which represents a year-to-date total of 5,695 units. It is the seventh best-selling model of 2016.

Qashqai 1.5 dCi 1

Dacia Sandero

In last place on our list we find a model that has earned its success little by little but with conviction. This is the Dacia Sandero. The low-cost model from the Romanian brand owned by Renault has become a more mature and robust product, which brought it sales of 2,576 units in March. So far in 2016, the Sandero has accumulated 5,339 units registered, placing it as the 9th best-selling model of the year.
