The ADAS system in the windscreen

One of the areas where safety systems are integrated, together with their respective cameras and radars, is the windscreen, and its calibration is extremely important.

The automotive sector continues to grow in terms of safety, with new technologies and concepts that offer safer driving for the vehicle and its occupants. Among the latest updates in vehicle accident prevention are the ADAS systems, which stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.

These systems consist of a set of technologies that help minimise the risks that arise in certain parts of the vehicle while it is being driven, as well as providing greater safety for the driver and passengers. These are technologies designed to combine data collected by sensors as a prior step to a scan producing high-definition 3D graphics of the environment surrounding the car. Lane keeping, cruise control and impact mitigation are three fundamental features on which this safety system is built, which also includes many other possible functions.

One of the parts of the vehicle where this ADAS system is optimally integrated is the windscreen, as it is a strategic area for achieving this safety function. For this reason, experts have focused their efforts on installing and connecting a major part of this technology to a car’s windscreen. Sensors installed in the front glass are able to detect obstacles in the environment with great precision and send information to the control unit so that the vehicle can perform the appropriate manoeuvre and thus avoid an accident. It is important to keep the glass completely clean.

These safety systems can operate accurately and with one hundred percent reliability if the system calibration is perfect. This aspect is decisive, since if this step is not carried out optimally, the driving assistance may not work correctly. The reason is that with a misaligned calibration, incomplete or erroneous data could reach the control unit. This correct adjustment of the windscreen must also be taken into account when the glass is replaced, and after this action, the ADAS calibration must be carried out, so that the technology as a whole will function optimally. It involves recalibrating the sensors and cameras so that the information transmitted is completely accurate and matches reality. Only in this way will correct signals be sent at every moment.

How is ADAS calibration carried out on the windscreen? This task should be left in the hands of expert, specialised technicians, who apply their training in the field with the qualified tools required for it.

ADAS, as a safety technology, will play an increasingly prominent role in vehicles. It detects certain problems, such as the car drifting out of its lane, or maintains an appropriate safety distance from other vehicles. It can even autonomously control the car’s speed, alerting the driver when it gets too close to another vehicle.

It is a technology capable of recognising and classifying objects, as well as warning the driver of possible hazards or of the condition of the road. It is also designed to brake or stop a car if necessary in order to avoid a collision.
