The Audi e-tron sets the Nürburgring lap record for production electric vehicles

The Audi e-tron has set the record at the Nürburgring circuit for production electric vehicles.

The legendary Nürburgring track will continue to be the home of lap records and an inevitable proving ground for vehicles running on every type of fuel for many years to come (if the circuit can resolve its administrative problems). Electric cars have started to tackle the Green Hell, and have timidly begun to set records, interspersed among combustion-engine vehicles.

First it was the Toyota EV P0001, which set the fastest lap for an electric car, at just under 7:48. Now it is the Audi e-tron, representing production electric cars, that has set another fast lap: 8:09.099.

The e-tron used had no speed limiter, so it could reach a top speed of around 250 km/h. Although the production model has a limiter that caps it at 200 km/h, to protect battery range, the only difference from the model that will be sold to the public was the limiter that Audi engineers removed to achieve the record.

For a 1,800 kg brick, the time has been very good. They have surely used slick tyres, which was also helped by the weight distribution achieved through the placement of the batteries and the low centre of gravity, according to Markus Winkelhock, the driver who piloted the e-tron around the ring.
