The Audi TT receives minor exterior updates, better standard equipment and more powerful engines

After four years on the market with its third generation, Audi is giving the TT a fresh look, with revised styling and engines and more standard equipment

It may not seem like much time has passed, but you might realise you’re getting on a bit if I tell you that the first generation of the Audi TT saw the light of day 20 years ago. Over these three years we have watched this coupé, which is also available as a convertible, from Audi endure through three generations and several versions, each one sportier than the last. Its third generation arrived in 2014, and at Audi they have decided that the time has come to give it a small facelift.

Audi has chosen the TT’s 20th anniversary to refresh the personality of its little sports car in both coupé and convertible bodywork. These updates will not bring very profound changes, but they are interesting nonetheless, such as a revision of its standard equipment, a new range of engines that will offer more power and, in addition, small aesthetic touches that will update its image.

At Audi they state that with this restyle the Audi TT will reinforce a more masculine and sporty image, something they aim to achieve with the characteristic three-dimensional Singleframe grille of Audi and larger air intakes, even on the entry-level version. Moving to the rear, the German brand has reinforced the horizontality of the TT with even more pronounced lines. Furthermore, at both ends, we will be able to optionally fit light units with LED and Matrix LED technology, which integrate the new dynamic indicators.

As a complement, if we want our Audi TT to have an even sportier look, we can always opt for the characteristic S Line package from Audi. If it is included, new elements will be added to the exterior, such as a front splitter, vertically designed air intakes, a titanium black finish for the grille, skirts with inserts, a rear diffuser of greater dimensions than the standard one and small air intakes below the rear light unit.

To complete the novelties affecting the exterior, Audi has added two new shades to the current range of body colours, namely Cosmos Blue, Pulse Orange and Turbo Blue, the latter only available with the S Line package. It is also worth remembering that both the coupé and roadster bodies come as standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, although if the owner wishes, these can be 18, 19 or 20 inches.

Mechanically, Audi has promised new petrol engines, which include a particulate filter, that will offer their owners more power, and can be combined with manual or dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. Unfortunately, the data in this regard has not yet been released, so we will have to wait a little longer to find out what Audi has in store for us. They also promise us more dynamic and sporty behaviour, especially if we opt for the S Line equipment, as we will be able to fit the Audi magnetic ride suspension, which lowers the height by 10 mm; but there will also be other elements that help achieve this behaviour, such as a four-link rear axle, progressive steering, ESC stability control or selective torque control for each wheel, which activates when cornering quickly.

Turning now to the interior, we can see that the standard equipment has been improved by Audi. In this way, across the entire range, you will find as standard:

  • Headrests integrated into the seat.
  • Sport seats with lateral pneumatic adjustment with the S Line package (optional on basic versions).
  • Audi virtual cockpit with a 12.3-inch screen.
  • Audi drive select dynamic driving system.
  • Light and rain sensors.
  • Key and automatic comfort climate control.
  • Interior LED lighting package.
  • Heated exterior rear-view mirrors.
  • Multifunction plus steering wheel.
  • Backlit USB ports and Bluetooth.

Finally, on the roadster version, the Audi TT will continue to use the grey or black fabric roof. A roof that, despite being made of this material, offers excellent sound insulation and weighs only 39 kilograms, and which can be opened or closed electrically in just 10 seconds, even while in motion as long as we do not exceed 50 km/h.

Anyone wishing to enjoy the new Audi TT will have to wait until the fourth quarter of this 2018, when it will be available, although orders can begin in October, with a price in Spain set at 39,550 euros for the coupé version and 43,270 euros for the roadster version.
