The BMW M2 receives an update that increases its power while keeping the essentials

The current BMW M2 arrived on the market just over a year ago, but it is already going to receive an update that has improved the engine’s behaviour and technology.

It has been just over a year since the BMW M2 was renewed with a second generation that updated the model to make it more appealing to buyers. Nevertheless, some voices spoke out against this new generation and pointed out several aspects of its design, as well as its high weight, which reaches 1,800 kg. Now, only a few months after its launch, BMW has decided to make some changes, although its focus has been mainly on the engine.

On the outside, its image remains virtually unchanged. The exhaust pipes, for example, have been modified. The BMW M2 now features them in black as standard, creating a more elegant look overall. What has been expanded is the range of body colours, which now includes the new Rojo Fuego metallic, Amarillo Sao Paulo, Gris Rascacielos metallic and Azul Portimao metallic.

The range of colours available for the BMW Individual has also been expanded, which now includes Azul Vudú, Verde Java, Gris Telesto and Púrpura Crepúsculo. This range of shades will allow for greater customisation of the car. In addition, new wheels, 19-inch twin-spoke silver ones on the front axle and 20-inch on the rear, which can be fitted with track-oriented tyres, have been added.

Inside, there are few changes. The sports steering wheel with a flattened bottom remains, which comes as standard wrapped in leather, but can optionally be replaced with Alcántara. The M sports seats, which are also optional, are now available in black and red, and the carbon seats, which until now were included in the M Race Track package, can now be chosen individually.

As for technology, the 12.3-inch instrument display and the 14.9-inch central screen remain, but they have been updated with operating system 8.5 and their usability has been adjusted. The navigation system has also gained an augmented-vision mode to improve its use.

Climate control, steering wheel and seat heating, along with other functions, can now be controlled from the central screen or by voice command.

More powerful engine

As for the engine, it has been improved to deliver up to 480 CV, compared with the 460 CV of the current variant. Maximum revs reach 7,200 rpm and peak power arrives at 6,250 rpm. Torque varies depending on whether a manual or automatic gearbox is used.

Those who opt for the six-speed manual gearbox will get a maximum torque of 550 Nm, the same as before. However, those who choose the automatic gearbox will see that figure rise to 600 Nm, both, of course, sent to the rear axle.

Looking at the time to reach 100 km/h, with the manual gearbox this is achieved in 4.2 seconds, while with the automatic it drops to 4 seconds. To reach 200 km/h, the figure is 13.7 seconds in the first case and 12.9 seconds in the second. Its top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

The BMW M2 will arrive on the market in August, and Europe is expected to account for 40% of total sales, although most are expected to be concentrated in the United States. There is no price yet for this update, so we will have to wait a few weeks to find out.
