The new BMW M5 has become the Safety Car that will serve in MotoGP competitions, with its first appearance at the Italian round.

In the major motorsport competitions we usually see great vehicles, impressive machines that deliver outstanding and remarkable performance. But there are also other vehicles that do not take part in the race and are equally important. The Safety Cars are also part of the sporting event and fulfil a very important function: ensuring the safety of the participants should any problem arise.

The Safety Cars must match the level of the competition vehicles, whether cars or motorcycles, and be ready to act when necessary. BMW has been taking part in MotoGP races for some time, where its cars fulfil this role, and the new BMW M5 MOTOGP™ SAFETY CAR has just made its debut.

The BMW M5 with hybrid propulsion was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival in July and this weekend took part in the Red Bull Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini. Before that, it was presented at a special event held in Milan, organised by BMW Italia, where the car could be seen in detail and its capabilities checked.

To shape this variant, BMW based it on the new version of the BMW M5, which has been redesigned to be a sports car to enjoy on track. The wide wheel arches, with redesigned side skirts, a sculpted front apron and a redesigned C-pillar area provide not only a dynamic appearance but also better aerodynamic behaviour.

On top of all this, a design conceived for use as a safety car has been added. The BMW Performance division has contributed several parts that reinforce its capabilities. Carbon front mounts, a rear aramid diffuser, carbon side skirts and carbon-titanium exhaust trims have been incorporated. The fuel tank cap is also made of carbon.

Other special features included in this Safety Car include the Safety Car roof bar, as well as a front diffuser. The Recaro seats offer comfort and safety to the occupants, and the fire extinguisher provides more complete safety equipment.

Engine

The BMW M5 uses an engine with the M HYBRID system. This combines a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology with an electric motor. Together they deliver a maximum output of 727 CV. The power of this M Power variant is transmitted to all four wheels through an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission. Other specifications ensure the driving experience is perfect at all times.

With all this, the BMW M5 MOTOGP™ SAFETY CAR took to the track on Saturday to fulfil its role.
