The Citroën H van, a vehicle ready to become a Food Truck

This summer we are getting used to seeing vehicles adapted to offer an interesting gastronomic offer. Yes, of course we have seen for a long time vans fitted out as churro stands and burger joints, but the concept of Food Truck goes a step further and brings us vans in which the most prestigious chefs are cooking so that those who approach these mobile restaurants can have the best dishes to eat on the street.

One of the vehicles born to perform this function was the Citroën H, a van launched in 1947 that reached the Spanish market in 1962. Although it is now that this seems to be a trend, for decades we have had this type of nomadic restaurant, and several street food stalls were installed on this model. Today, several units have been restored to bring back that look, and the brand has run a campaign to take several of these vans to the main Spanish cities.

Citroën H vans continued to be manufactured until 1981, and they have experienced a surprising revival following the emergence of this trend. Apparently, their vintage and carefree look allows entrepreneurs who have chosen this type of catering to earn a living to create very distinctive spaces. The shape of the body allows a quick and practical conversion, into which a kitchen can be perfectly integrated.

The trend has made this van highly sought after and one of the most popular within this trend that is gaining ground in our country. So much so that people have already started to change the name, and it has begun to be called “gastroneta“, although the term is… a little bit colloquial.

The brand is aware of this new way of experiencing gastronomy and has promoted the creation of the Citroën Plateselector Food Tour, a caravan of these vans, adapted as food trucks that tours some of the main Spanish cities. With great success, apparently. And with the introduction of this new trend, other brands have got going and have designed vehicles that can be used efficiently as mobile gastronomic temples. One of these models is the Peugeot Food Truck, which is on display as a concept at the French pavilion of the Milan World Expo, representing the future of mobile restaurants. Although, admittedly, without the charm of the Citroën H.
