Bentley is raising its commitment to electrification, and by 2023 all of its models will have a hybrid version. In addition, its first electric car will arrive in 2025.

The first electric car from Bentley will arrive in 2025, because Bentley cannot stop being an old-school luxury brand, but the company has dipped its toes into electrification with the Bentley Bentayga plug-in hybrid. The crossover, which will reach the United States at the end of this same year, will drive electrification forward for the premium carmaker.

Chris Craft, board member of Bentley for sales and marketing, has stated that the brand “will launch hybrid versions of all our models by 2023“. Craft has also confirmed that the first electric car from Bentley will arrive in 2025.

Little is known about the next electric car from Bentley, but Craft has noted that electric vehicles are “a large part of our future”. While electric sales still represent only a small fraction of the overall automotive market, they are growing in popularity, and “more than 30% of luxury car buyers are interested in electric cars”.

The board member of Bentley has also revealed that electric cars are well suited to Bentley, since electric motors deliver instant torque, which is a hallmark of the brand. Electric vehicles are also quiet, and that is another aspect closely associated with ultra-luxury brands such as Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Bentley commits to electrifying its models

Although Craft has not said much about the upcoming hybrid cars, the following models will probably receive these powertrains: the Bentley Continental GT, the Bentley Flying Spur and the Bentley Mulsanne. It is unclear what type of powertrain will drive them, but they may well use the same powertrain as the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid.

What may well be true is that the new hybrid and electric cars from Bentley could be based on the technologies and even the new electric vehicle platform, MEB, of the Volkswagen group. Craft has also revealed that the future electric car from Bentley that will launch in 2025 will also help the company meet emissions regulations.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid 2

The first hybrid from Bentley, the Bentayga Hybrid, features a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine, an electric motor and a battery of undisclosed capacity. The company has been shy about giving details, but has previously confirmed that the model can be recharged in just two and a half hours and will have a fully electric range of 50 kilometres under the WLTP homologation cycle.

Adrian Hallmark, new president and chief executive of Bentley Motors, has stated that “the Bentayga Hybrid is our first step on the path toward electrification, combining Bentley’s traditional values with the latest technologies. It gives customers the best of both worlds: effortless, attractive performance on the road and quiet, emission-free driving in the city, which will become increasingly important with the constantly changing regulations around the world.

“Following Bentley’s tradition, the Bentayga hybrid pioneers a new automotive segment, the luxury hybrid, and puts Bentley on the road to a sustainable, electrified future”
