The Ford Ecoboost 1 litre is the International Engine of the Year
The International Engine of the Year award has been presented, and the unanimous winner is the small Ford 1-litre Ecoboost engine that powers the Ford Focus.

Based on the votes of 76 journalists from 35 countries, the Ford 1-litre Ecoboost engine, which is delivering interesting results for Ford in a version of the Focus, has been named International Engine of the Year, in Germany. For Ford, this is the first time the brand has received the award for Best International Engine in the 13 years of the awards’ history. To complete the success, the same engine has won the Engine Technology International magazine award in the engines of 1 litre or less category.
The rest of the categories also had their awards. In the Eco Engine of the Year category, the top prize went to the 1.4-litre range-extender engine that powers the Chevrolet Volt/Opel Ampera, its main rival on points being, once again, the 1-litre Ford engine.
The High-Performance Engine of the Year award went to the 4.5-litre V8 of the Ferrari 458 Italia/458 Spider, leaving behind the 3.8 of the McLaren MP4-12C. In the 1-litre to 1.4-litre category, the winner was an old acquaintance, the 1.4 TSI of Volkswagen that powers many models in the group. From 1.4 to 1.8 litres, the new 1.6 turbo from BMW and PSA made it onto the winners’ podium, as the engine of the Mini, several Peugeot and Citroën models.
In the 1.8 to 2.0 litre range, BMW prevailed thanks to the performance of the two-litre Twin-Turbo engine in the 3 Series, Z4, 520i and X1 and X3. From 2 to 2.5 litres, Audi dominated with its 5-cylinder turbo engine from the TT RS and S3 Sportback. Continuing with engines between 2.5 and 3 litres, the winner could be none other than the BMW inline-6, the 3-litre twin-turbo from the 1M Series. In the heavyweight category, from 3 to 4 litres, BMW took another award, with the V8 fitted to the M3.
