The American manufacturer announced in a press release that will install 500-kilowatt solar panels at its assembly plant in Michigan, which indicates that the facilities will feature the largest solar power generation system in the United States.

To make the project a reality, Ford is working together with Detroit Edison, Xtreme Power and the government of Michigan. With all this support, the manufacturer plans to complete the full implementation by the end of this year.

The system includes a 750 kW energy storage structure, which has a battery reserve capacity of two million kilowatt-hours, roughly what 100 homes consume over the course of a year.

Ford states that with this solar energy system it will not only contribute to environmental preservation, but it will also allow the company to drive technological advancement in the industry, and it will also cut energy consumption by around $160,000 (€125,000 at current exchange rates).

Another interesting point is that the Michigan plant will be one of the facilities responsible for producing the Ford Focus.
