The Ford Kuga gets a refreshed look and new engines

The Ford Kuga is one of the most popular SUVs, at least in the Spanish market. Now, midway through the lifecycle of its second generation, it receives a restyling that makes it even more appealing.

It improves practically across the board, refining its design, expanding its equipment options and fitting better engines.

The Ford Kuga was launched in 2008, derived from the contemporary Focus generation. At the height of the compact SUV boom, the Kuga quickly became one of the most popular models in the American manufacturer’s range, thanks to a very spacious cabin and a driving dynamic that made it the compact SUV with the best handling in its segment.

With the arrival of the second generation in 2012, the Kuga took a leap forward in every respect. Although its design was more conservative, its build quality was noticeably better, it featured more powerful engines and could be equipped with a level of features some of its rivals could only dream of.

Now the people at Ford want to refresh the Kuga’s image with a restyling. Thanks to this update, the design of this model now looks much more like that of other members of the Ford SUV family, such as the new Edge, which will arrive in Europe in the coming months.

Externally the changes are obvious, with a completely redesigned front end featuring a large trapezoidal grille and light units with a more refined design that, for the first time, will feature LED technology. The alloy wheels, the smaller rear lights are also changed, and new body colours are added.

Inside, the modifications have focused on improving perceived quality and the ergonomics of some controls, also introducing the new SYNC 3 multimedia system, consisting of an 8″ touchscreen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay systems. In addition, the Active City Stop collision avoidance system extends its operating range, going from 30 km/h to 50 km/h.

Mechanically, the Kuga expands its range with the addition of a new diesel engine, the 1.5 TDCi, the same engine fitted to the Focus, in its 120 CV version. The diesel range is thus made up of the 1.5 TDCi with 120 CV and the 2.0 TDCi with 150 CV, while the petrol range has three power levels on the 1.5 Ecoboost: 120, 150 and 185 CV.
