We have been following the news about the arrival of the Ford Mondeo. It will arrive in October, and today we focus on another of the new features this model from the American brand will offer. It is the Pedestrian Detection technology, something that has been widely discussed in recent weeks.

We have seen how this technology has been one of the stars of TSI, the convention dealing with vehicle connectivity, which seeks progress toward the possibility of creating self-driving cars. Now it will be present in the Ford Mondeo to reduce the risk of pedestrian run-overs.

The Pedestrian Detection system allows the on-board computer to detect the presence of a pedestrian within the range of the car’s sensors and camera, and warns the driver with an acoustic and visual signal. If the driver does not respond, the system reduces the gap between the brake pads and discs to shorten braking time.

Finally, if there is still no response, it can take control of the brakes and perform an emergency stop, reducing speed and increasing the driver’s reaction time. To determine whether the obstacle ahead of the car is a pedestrian or an object, tests have been carried out with different mannequins, placed in different postures and with different sizes and volumes.

The Ford Mondeo can also perform an emergency stop if a collision with the vehicle in front is about to happen. While the Pedestrian Detection system operates at speeds of up to 80 km/h, the Active City Stop works at speeds of up to 40 km/h.

Radar technology makes possible the new Distance Indicator, which gives the driver an interface that shows the distance to the vehicle ahead. This is complemented by Adaptive Cruise Control, which keeps a set distance from it. Lane Keeping Aid steers the wheel so the car does not leave its lane, and it also uses Traffic Sign Recognition to be aware of the particularities of each road.
