Ford is developing a new generation of the Mustang GT500, and it has become known that it will be no ordinary car: the American company has revealed that this new version will have more than 700 CV, which could make it the most powerful muscle car on the market. Ford Performance intends to snatch the crown from the SRT Hellcat, which delivers 707 CV.

To do so it will use a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, although it has not yet been confirmed whether this will ultimately be the engine that allows the Mustang GT500 to achieve that goal. A prototype, a test mule, has been spotted fitted with this engine, but that does not guarantee it will be the one chosen for the production model.

An engine built to rule its segment

However, Ford Motorsport does not simply aim to reach the 700 CV mark and narrowly exceed it. Engineers have their sights set on a car producing up to 740 CV, a figure that will place it above all its rivals and produce a tremendously powerful and viscerally appealing car.

This version of the Mustang aims to be the most powerful “muscle car” on the market. Considering that the current Ford Mustang GT500 offers 662 CV, this represents a considerable increase, one that will raise not only power but also the model’s overall capabilities. By comparison, even the Chevrolet Camaro Z1 will fall well behind, roughly 100 CV short of the new version arriving in a few months.

It is not only about more power but also about performance. For that reason, efforts will be made to reduce the car’s weight by replacing some body and chassis elements with aluminium and carbon fibre, something already present on the GT350, so that the extra power will be combined with lower weight. Is more needed?

Everything is still up in the air, as no confirmed data exists, but Ford has assured that we will be able to see the definitive model at the end of this year or the beginning of the next. Patience, then, and wait.
