The Genesis G80 2020 will not equip its V8 engine

The new Genesis G80 2020 would equip a twin-turbo V6 engine that will offer 370 CV and 509 Nm of maximum torque.

The all-new Genesis G80 2020 will reach the market in September but will not equip its legendary V8 heart. Manfred Fitzgerald, CEO of Genesis, has confirmed that the redesigned saloon will be presented in South Korea next September and that it will feature the “next evolution of our design language”. It will be launched in global markets after its domestic launch.

It is unknown when the new Genesis G80 will reach the United States, but the company’s CEO confirmed that the car will not be offered with a V8 engine. This statement is very surprising, since the current Genesis G80 is available with a 5.0-litre V8 engine capable of producing up to 430 CV and 519 Nm of maximum torque.

Since the V8 engine is not an option, as assured by the CEO of Genesis, everything points to the top engine being a twin-turbo V6 capable of developing around 370 CV and 509 Nm of maximum torque. This engine is less powerful than the legendary V8 but is not more efficient in terms of fuel consumption. The current Genesis G80 with the twin-turbo V6 saves only 2.35 l/100 km compared with the V8 variant.

The V8 engine should continue to be offered in the Genesis G90, but it seems to be living on borrowed time. As Manfred Fitzgerald explained, “do not expect another evolution of the V8, since we really have to pay close attention to markets and legislation in order to cover our bets.”

The Genesis G80 says goodbye to its V8

As the CEO of Genesis ruled out the possibility of updating the engine, it seems the brand is looking towards the future without the V8. As a result, we should not expect to see it in any of the upcoming models. Furthermore, it is likely to be phased out when the Genesis G90 is redesigned.

The news will probably disappoint some of the company’s most devoted fans, but Genesis intends to embrace electrification as part of a plan announced in 2017. The brand will launch its first electric vehicle in 2021. Eventually, it will be followed by a model with greater range that could offer up to 500 kilometres.

Genesis Mint, the brand’s first electric car

The brand plans to begin its electric offensive in 2021 with the arrival of the Genesis Mint. It is a small electric car with a luxury interior. It offers a range of 320 kilometres, making it an ideal vehicle for city driving.

The first electric car from Genesis has two doors and a reduced length. It seats two people and follows the Parabolic Line design language. It is painted Hunter Green and has a very low roof, which improves its aerodynamics. It also features a sporty line and large-diameter wheels. The charging port is centred at the rear, which makes recharging easier.
