As if the indiscriminate rise in fuel prices were not enough, the Government has now pulled a measure out of its sleeve to reduce fuel spending: the Council of Ministers today approved a measure under which the maximum speed on motorways and dual carriageways will be reduced to 110 km/h, as part of a plan to save energy.

The situation in Libya gets worse by the day, and the conflict unfolding in several North African countries is causing rises in the price of a barrel of oil, which is driving up the energy bill and must be contained, as Deputy Prime Minister Rubalcaba explained. This speed reduction will be temporary, though of indefinite duration, and will begin to apply next Monday, 7 March.

The Council of Ministers has also adopted other measures aimed at promoting public transport, such as a 5% cut to Renfe Cercanías and Media Distancia services. In any case, to apply the new speed limit the road signs will have to be changed, although the Ministry of Industry indicates that using electronic panels would be sufficient, but the fines system would also have to be adapted, although it will not affect driving licence points.
