The Honda Civic hybrid bids farewell to Europe, welcome the 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine

The Honda Civic will add to its diesel range the new 1.6 i-DTeC engine, which will complement the current 2.2. The hybrid models will be withdrawn from the European market.

Accustomed to so many years of diesel engines in Europe, Honda has decided that the Civic will be withdrawn from the countries of the continent where hybrid versions of the model were still available. In the case of Spain, it is being sold with the 2.2 i-DTEC diesel, in addition to the petrol versions, and for this we refer you to the presentation and road test in Málaga that our colleague Javier Vicente wrote a few days ago.

Now, since we Europeans just don’t seem to get the idea of hybrid engines, the solution that Honda has found to replace it will be a new diesel engine: an engine more compact than the current 2.2, but with better consumption and emissions levels.

And although the data on the new diesel engine is not yet very extensive, it can be said that it will be called 1.6 i-DTEC, that it will offer 110 to 120 horsepower, and that it will put the Civic in a position to compete against competitors’ diesel engines of around 1.5 litres or less than two litres of displacement.

The future of the 2.2 is secured anyway, since its smaller sibling will not replace it, but will instead become a perhaps more economical option in the Honda Civic range. The arrival of the new engine is scheduled for the end of next year.
