The Hyundai i20N greets us from the shadows

Hyundai confirms the arrival of the i20N after unveiling a video in which we can see this more radical variant greeting us from the shadows.

Hyundai I20n Teaser 2

We knew that Hyundai was looking to expand its successful N family with other models and, although we all imagined the Tucson would be the next to receive that badge, it seems we were wrong. After the facelift of one of the smallest models in the Korean brand’s lineup, the i20, the chances of an N variant existing grew even further. And Hyundai Austria has just shared a video showing us the features of the latest generation of its city car, but the truly interesting part comes at the end of the video.

Hyundai has managed to turn the tables with its latest batch of vehicles, which has created such a stir that it can take on its main European rivals. The Korean brand, aware of this, has decided to use the same recipe for its next wave of vehicles but altering certain ingredients.

The new i20 is a clear example of this, a model that adopts a fresher, more modern design language but remains faithful to that unwavering value for money. But Hyundai has wanted to go further by showing us what is most likely the first image of the new i20N, the more performance-oriented version of the Korean city car that will go head-to-head with the Ford Fiesta ST and the Volkswagen Polo GTi.

However, Hyundai has been cautious about revealing information on this new i20N, which is why we can only glimpse it in the gloom for a few seconds. The first thing that catches our attention is a slimmer, more muscular figure, adjectives we attribute to the Korean city car thanks to oversized wheel arches, model-specific alloy wheels, a ribbed bonnet and a very eye-catching rear spoiler.

To these elements we must add more sporty front and rear bumpers and matching side skirts. But, without a doubt, the main course is found in the mechanical section. Here we will find a three-cylinder engine that, thanks to turbocharging, will be capable of delivering a power output close to -or even above- 200 CV.

For now, Hyundai has not revealed official data about its launch, but we can expect that it will be a matter of months or even weeks before we learn more details. In this way, the Korean brand returns to the fray with more force than ever and with a vehicle ready to challenge those European titans that dominated freely for a long time.
