The Lamborghini Urus confirmed for 2017

For months, after the presentation of the Lamborghini Urus, doubts about when the bull brand’s crossover would reach the production line at the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory have been growing. At Lamborghini they were torn between launching it and thereby expanding the market, or keeping only two mid-engined supercars in their model range, such as the Gallardo and the Aventador, thus preserving their tradition.

But we cannot speak of a tradition of supercars in a brand that began by making tractors, and that is why Lamborghini has confirmed, after months of rumours and speculation, the arrival of the Urus on the market in 2017, without specifying at which point in that year. Rupert Stadler, CEO of Audi, was in charge of announcing it during the Giro d’Italia for the Italian firm’s 50th anniversary.

Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, was able to confirm a V8 engine for the luxury SUV at the Beijing Motor Show, where the Urus was unveiled, the distant successor to the Lamborghini LM002, an off-roader from the last century. The engine, with an output of more than 600 CV thanks to twin-turbo supercharging, will be paired with a automatic gearbox with a dual-clutch arrangement and seven ratios, and a permanent all-wheel-drive system.

The brand’s president, Winkelmann, let slip in February, during an interview, that the Lamborghini Urus could also be offered with a second type of engine, but the CEO did not go into details. The bull brand’s secret may lie in the first hybrid model from the firm, in which the V8 engine would be the star, accompanied by a small electric motor that would help reduce consumption and improve performance.
