The Lancia Stratos will return at the Geneva Motor Show, but it will not be a model of Lancia

The New Stratos will make its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March, representing the return of the legendary model in a limited edition of 25 units

The Lancia Stratos was a very special model that was born in 1973 and remained in production until 1978. 492 units were built, which made it a legendary and cult model. So the news that it is coming back, in an updated version, has delighted more than one enthusiast. Around 25 units will be manufactured, a figure that has not yet been fully confirmed but seems to be the standard being followed by the two companies involved in its return. Surprisingly, it will not be Lancia who builds it, but two external companies unrelated to the brand.

The New Stratos will have nothing to do with Lancia, and that also indicates that it will not use the engine of Ferrari that equipped the original car. This goes back to 2008, when the company Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT) decided to bring the model back, but found that although Pininfarina, the creator of the bodywork, was involved in the process, Ferrari refused to supply the chassis and engine that were part of the model.

Now, a new mechanical base has been created for this project, allowing it to move forward. The company MAT has joined New Stratos Gbr, and together they have created the foundation on which this new limited edition of the New Stratos will be built. It will arrive in a few months and will be offered in three different versions to appeal to different types of buyers of this model.

The GT version is designed for road driving, while the second version will focus on track use. The third version will be called Safari and will be oriented towards the world of rallying. Although we have no information yet about the engine the model will ultimately use, rumours point to an engine producing 550 CV. We will have to wait until the Geneva Motor Show to learn the details behind the return of one of the most coveted cars in automotive history.

The images you can see in the gallery accompanying this article come from the project that was cancelled at the time, before it was revived this year. The differences, we hope, will be few, but as we said, we will have to wait a little longer…
