Land Rover has marked in its calendar next Wednesday 3 September as the date on which it will officially present the Discovery Sport. The most important details of the Freelander’s successor will be unveiled then but, unfortunately for the British manufacturer, its design will not be as novel as it would have liked. A photograph of two versions of a scale model of the SUV leaked yesterday, revealing its definitive appearance.

A month ago, Land Rover took to the streets a Discovery Sport unit dressed in promotional camouflage that concealed the features of its design. With these scale models, it can be confirmed everything that that “disguise” hinted at, which was no small thing given that the lines of the headlights, the windows, etc. could clearly be made out.

These reduced-scale versions of the SUV have an appearance inspired by the one previewed by the Discovery Vision Concept. The differences consist of the usual changes applied to a prototype to create the production vehicle, such as the elimination of the suicide rear doors, along with a somewhat less rugged bearing and a more urban character. The street-going Discovery Sport is lower, shorter and better proportioned than the prototype.

The scale models confirm that customers will be able to choose different color combinations for the bodywork, pillars, roof and wheels, something the Range Rover Evoque popularised for the brand. Both feature a panoramic roof that extends to the C-pillar, but it is still too early to know whether the Discovery Sport will have an identical one.

This is not the first time a reduced-scale reproduction has spoiled the surprise for a car manufacturer. In May of last year, the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class was seen in 1:18 format a few days before its presentation, and Dodge suffered the same fate with the then-named SRT Viper when Hot Wheels showed its particular interpretation of the American sports car without waiting for the first official images to appear.
