The Mercedes G500 4×4² goes on sale to the public for €226,100

Although less striking than the G63 6×6, the G500 4×4² captivated a considerable number of visitors to the Mercedes-Benz stand at the last Geneva Motor Show. Enough for its senior executives to approve its conversion from show vehicle to production model and to integrate it into the G-Class range, recently updated with changes we listed for you in May.
The German manufacturer has announced that it is already accepting orders for the G500 4×4² and owners will be able to collect theirs from December 2015. Its price, for now only confirmed for Germany – including 19% VAT – stands at €226,100, that is, a premium of €120,000 over the conventional G500 in that country, and only surpassed by the G65 AMG, which is available there for €271,915 – in Spain it exceeds €300,000 -.

Based on the long-wheelbase G500, the 4×4² measures 34 centimetres more in width and 30 centimetres more in height. Its bodywork is distinguished by the AMG-style bumpers, the exhaust outlets located in front of the rear wheels, the LEDs at the upper edge of the windscreen and the carbon fibre protections.
Thanks to its portal axles, which replace the rigid ones of standard G-Classes and which house certain components such as the differential in a higher position, ground clearance increases by 24 centimetres – 45 versus 21 on the G500 – and the wading depth by one metre. From the G63 6×6 it inherits various traction technologies, permanent all-wheel drive, and the damping.

The latter offers two modes selectable via the rotary dial on the centre console. COMFORT prioritises smoothness, but is capable of automatically increasing stiffness in an emergency. SPORT minimises body roll and is designed to take corners with greater precision.
The production G500 4×4² is fitted with 325/55 tyres on 22-inch wheels. Mercedes-Benz does not mention in the official statement whether the optional equipment includes the more compact tyre and wheel combination it was considering a few months ago. The engine is identical to that of the G500: the four-litre V8 supercharged by two turbochargers, producing 422 hp and shared with the new Mercedes-AMG C63 and GT.
