The MG4 is now also produced in Thailand

SAIC has begun expanding production of the MG4 Electric outside China. First to Thailand, and later it is expected to a new plant in European territory as well

The first unit of the electric MG4 has just rolled off the production line of SAIC-CP, a Joint Venture created by the Chinese manufacturer SAIC Motor and the Thai Charoen Pokphand Group. The plant, located in the province of Chonburi in Thailand, has a production capacity that can reach up to 100 thousand vehicles per year, according to the company.

From now on, in addition to combustion vehicles, the assembly line of this plant will also produce units of the electric MG4 intended both for the local Thai market and for export to other markets, although it has not yet been specified which ones these might be.

It is important to note that SAIC recently also inaugurated a battery plant in the province of Chonburi, with a production capacity of 50 thousand battery packs per year. SAIC’s relationship with this Thai region is therefore not new, and the Chinese manufacturer already knew very well the advantages and disadvantages of investing in the area.

The MG4 Electric is not only a success in Europe

SAIC has sold vehicles of the MG brand in Thailand since 2019 and added the electric MG4 to its product catalogue in that market in September 2022, coinciding with its global launch. MG developed the MG4 precisely with the intention of making it a model suitable for sale in multiple markets, not only in China. There, however, it is known as MG Mulan instead of MG4 Electric, which is its name in all the other markets where it is on sale, including Europe.

Finally, it should be noted that according to a recent market study carried out by the company Canalys, MG is currently the leading Chinese company in exporting plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, with a market share of 25.3 percent. That is, one quarter of all Chinese vehicles exported with these propulsion systems are of the MG brand. Quite something.
