Peugeot wants to return to the sports saloon segment, something it could do through a hybrid variant of its 508.

We should be pleased, since the almost forgotten sports saloon segment was falling into oblivion. However, thanks to brands like Peugeot, we may see it shine again as it did in the past. The 508 not only arrives as a clear showcase of design, but also as a perfect foundation for a sporty saloon ready to act as a breath of fresh air in these times. For now, we know few details about this future, more radical variant, but everything points to its debut taking place sometime next year.

This segment is once again fighting to have its moment of glory, something that will be possible thanks to new technologies. At various shows, the lion brand took the opportunity to present prototypes based on the 508 that aimed to preview that sporty version, which is generating so much anticipation, along with several quite revealing details.

It was at the last Geneva Motor Show that Peugeot presented the 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered, a concept car quite faithful to the brand’s production models, which anticipated a new line of products. With this premise, we can expect the production sporty 508 -whose nameplate could be PSE- to draw on various elements present in this prototype.

Besides a more aggressive look and an interior featuring top-tier materials, we can expect a sporty mechanical layout that is also environmentally responsible. The lion brand is one of the manufacturers most strongly committed to electric mobility and hybrid engines, two solutions that will be reflected in that future division of more radical vehicles.

In this way, it would not be far-fetched to expect this supposed 508 PSE to use a combustion engine and two electric motors, just as the prototype that previews it does. The chosen petrol heart would be the well-known 200 CV Puretech, supported by two electric motors of 100 CV each, bringing total power up to 400 CV.

All-wheel drive would also be present in this new variant, as would the ability to drive in 100% electric mode to save fuel and considerably reduce emissions. For now, Peugeot has not announced a presentation date, but we can expect it to be at the next Geneva Motor Show, where the brand will once again breathe life into that forgotten sports saloon segment.
