The new generation of the MG ZS electric could reach Europe very soon

The MG ZS is achieving considerable sales volume in Europe, and the Chinese manufacturer is already preparing a new generation of this compact SUV to maintain its competitiveness in the market.

According to the latest reports, MG has completed development of a new compact electric SUV for the Chinese market, which will be called the S5 EV there. What is most interesting for us, however, is that the specifications announced for this new model suggest that MG could also sell it in markets outside China as the new generation of the electric ZS. It is speculated that this could happen towards the end of this same year at the earliest.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has approved two rear-wheel-drive variants of the S5 EV, both equipped with a 125 kW motor, capable of reaching a top speed of 170 km/h. This powertrain used by MG is apparently supplied by United Automotive Electronics, a company based in Shanghai.

Both variants of the S5 EV also feature a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, supplied in this case by Times SAIC Power Battery, a joint venture that SAIC created together with CATL in 2017. However, the capacity of these battery packs and the range they offer have not yet been revealed.

More details about the new S5 EV

Additionally, we also know the dimensions of this new compact SUV from MG. The S5 EV measures 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide and 1,621 mm high. It is therefore 153 mm longer, 40 mm wider and up to 28 mm lower than the current generation ZS EV. The wheelbase of the new model is also greater, with 149 mm more, for a total of 2,730 mm. In this way, we can imagine that the Chinese manufacturer will have improved interior space, especially in the rear seats.

The S5 EV can optionally be fitted with 18-inch wheels, instead of the standard 17-inch wheels. Its design is modern, with split headlights, a sloping roofline, curved bodywork and glass lines, and flush roof rails. The absence of a traditional front grille leaves no doubt that it is an electric vehicle. Likewise, at first glance, the split lower air intake and the extremely wide rear lights also stand out, which are probably inspired by those of the MG4, with which it will possibly share its platform.

Finally, MG has announced three different kerb weight figures for this new electric compact SUV: 1,615 kg, 1,685 kg and 1,740 kg. This leads us to think that there will probably be three different versions of the S5 EV in China, with different battery packs and equipment levels.
